The Belarusian State Academic Musical Theater (BSAMT) took its recent premiere of “West Side Story” to Gomel. On June 13, 2012, the legendary American musical was presented to over 1,100 viewers at the Culture and Sports Center of the Gomel Branch of the Belarusian Railroads. The audience was enchanted by the everlasting love story told by BSAMT troupe using the language of innovative contemporary American choreography Paul Emerson and unsurpassed music of the legendary Leonard Bernstein.
In his remarks to the audience in Gomel introducing the joint US-Belarusian project supported by the U.S. Embassy, Charge d’Affaires Michael Scanlan noted that “more than 50 years ago “West Sid Story” – a show about young people in New York City whose love transcends artificial boundaries – changed musical theater forever. Now it is making history once again, and this time in Belarus.”
In the coming theater season, BSAMT will perform “West Side Story” throughout Belarus, including in all the oblast capitals.
