U.S. Embassy Statement on 20th anniversary of Chernobyl Tragedy (April 26, 2006)
The Embassy of the United States of America expresses its sympathy and solidarity with the people of Belarus and all peoples affected by the tragic events surrounding the explosion of the Chernobyl AES twenty years ago today. Through the years following this event, tens of thousands of Americans have opened up their hearts and homes to thousands of Belarusians affected by this tragedy. Many American humanitarian and charitable organizations, such as Dr William Novick's heart surgery teams, have volunteered and continue to volunteer their efforts and donations to help the Belarusian people. United States Government agencies working directly and through American charitable organizations and in support of international efforts have provided hundreds of millions of dollars of humanitarian assistance and deliveries of medications since April 26, 1986.
The United States Government continues its strong commitment to the Belarusian people in providing assistance, research and support in joint efforts with Belarusians and international partners to address the effects of this tragedy and to prevent future tragedies. This week the United States State Department working with American and Belarusian organizations and with Belarusian authorities is facilitating a delivery of over $4.8 million of medicines donated by American pharmaceutical companies to address in part Chernobyl related illnesses. The Chernobyl tragedy knew no national boundaries and addressing its effects knows no national or political limitations. The people of the United States stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Belarus in remembering the human tragedy of Chernobyl today and in working together to address its effects and ensuring a healthy future for all our peoples.
