Belarusian Prison Library Receives U.S. Book Donation
The U.S. Embassy in Minsk has donated a 57-volume collection of books by American authors to the library of a minimum security prison facility in Zhlobin, Gomel region of Belarus. U.S. Embassy representatives delivered the books, all Russian-language publications, to the correctional institution on April 24. They were accompanied by Belarusian journalist Pavel Mazheiko who had spent 7 months in the institution after being convicted of slander against Belarusian President Lukashenko. The journalist initiated the development of the library, which also has received gifts of books from his friends, residents of Zhlobin, and the Belarusian Association of Journalists.
