Documentaries
"The Forgotten Mission". This Russian-language documentary tells the story of international assistance to Belarus in 1946-47—the time of devastation, famine and shortage of resources in this country. UNRRA (United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration) deployed a mission of experts and technical staff in Minsk to help Belarusian authorities determine the country’s immediate needs and ensure effective distribution of supplies. The U.S. Embassy in Belarus together with the United Nations Office and World War II Museum in Minsk researched the issue which resulted in a string of events bringing back to Belarusians this page of the nation’s history. “The Story of a Handshake” is a short Russian-language documentary produced by the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Belarus for public viewing at the event commemorating the anniversary of the meeting of Soviet and American troops on the Elbe River in April 1945. The film is based on an interview with Alexander Silvashko, whose photo shaking hands with Bill Robertson of the U.S. Army’s 69th Infantry Division in the town of Torgau has remained a prominent reminder of that remarkable encounter.
