Ambassador Stewart Visits Polotsk; Discusses Role of Women in Society
Ambassador Stewart visited Polotsk on March 15th and 16th, her first visit there as U.S. Ambassador to Belarus. During her two-day trip to this historic city, the Ambassador had an initial meeting with city administration officials where a variety of topics of mutual interest were discussed.
The Ambassador then toured the American Corner, located at the Central Library of Polotsk, and had a lively discussion with local students and teachers on the role of women in society. While there, the Ambassador donated a poster show to the American Corner highlighting the role of key American women leaders of the 20th century. Ambassador Stewart also fielded questions from local and regional press on a number of issues.
On the second day of her visit, Ambassador Stewart toured Polotsk State University and a recently renovated wing of this institution. She also had the opportunity to meet with students and faculty there to discuss her perspectives on women’s role in U.S. society, as well as to present to them a donation of English language and American Studies materials.
The Ambassador also met with several leading local entrepreneurs and discussed the economic environment in the region. The visit was complemented by tours of several sites of cultural interest, including the Saint Sophia Cathedral and the Convent of Saint Euphrosyne.
