Hollywood Classics Film Festival Kicks off at POBEDA Theater
Management Officer Patrick Fenning addressing the audience at festival opening ceremony at Pobeda Theater
The Oscar-winning 1955 Marty by Delbert Mann opened a week of American
classical films at POBEDA Film Theater in Minsk on September 27.
Hollywood Classics Film Festival is the fourth event of its kind
co-sponsored by the U.S. Embassy and its local partner organizations
since 2003. This year's festival program, along with Marty, brought
together still another intriguing selection of fine American films,
including: The Night of the Hunter, 1955, director Charles Laughton;
Midnight Cowboy, 1969, director John Schlesinger; and Manhattan, 1979
director Woody Allen. In his welcome remarks proceeding the first
screening night, Embassy Management Officer Patrick Fenning noted that
"some of the movies you will be seeing this week are already well known
to many viewers here and for others, you will be seeing these films for
the first time, which we hope will pique your interest in Hollywood
classic films." The audience at POBEDA theater, including a surprising
mix of young film-goers and senior citizens still passionate about
Hollywood classic movies, warmly received the program. As a result, the
American Embassy in Minsk looks forward already to next year's Hollywood
Classics Film Festival at POBEDA theater.
