Embassy Statement on Release of Vladimir Koudinov (February 6, 2001)

We congratulate the Koudinov family on their reunion.

This positive step by the Belarusian authorities is an example of the type of action needed to restore respect for human rights and a period of peace in the period before presidential elections, as called for by the OSCE.

We hope that the government of Belarus will follow this initial positive step towards compliance with the OSCE criteria by ceasing all politically motivated trials, releasing all political prisoners and offering a full accounting for the whereabouts of those that have disappeared.
