U.S. Embassy Condemns Sentence and Calls for Release of Political Prisoners

The United States strongly condemns the politically-motivated imprisonment of political activists Pavel Severinets and Aleksey Shein, whom the authorities on July 24 convicted of distributing leaflets advertising the United Democratic Forces’ July 27 Independence Day meetings. We call for an end to political harassment by the authorities and the immediate release of Severinets and Shein, and all other political prisoners in Belarus, including former presidential candidate Aleksandr Kozulin.
