Embassy Statement on January 21 Protest, Sentence against Journalist

January 23, 2008
Minsk, Belarus

U.S. diplomats, together with diplomats from other embassies, observed the demonstrations held January 21 on October Square and Independence Square in Minsk.  Actions taken against the peaceful demonstrators -- including arrests and forceful dispersal -- represent restrictions of fundamental human rights.  As a separate matter, the Embassy expresses its deep concern over the unjustified conviction of independent journalist Aleksandr Sdvizhkov.  We continue to urge the authorities to permit Belarusian citizens to exercise their human rights, including the freedom of expression, without restriction.

As before, the Embassy reiterates its concern for the well-being of all prisoners currently held on politically motivated charges and calls for their immediate release.
